Update 4/29/07
We are preparing for two great fundraising activities that will not only raise money but promote ACB as well.
One June 23, 2007 at the Ritz Theater, in Talladega, will be the first annual ACB Concert to benefit the Alabama Council of the Blind
The 2006 State Convention was a great success, even if it didn’t take place until late January 2007. The Huntsville Chapter and the Holiday Inn Research Park were excellent host and the attendee’s were well pleased with the service and hospitality.
Convention Highlights
Many great events took place during the convention, but to save time I will only touch on a few, for now. The Scholarship Committee presented a new award “The Berna Specht Braille Literacy Award” the award was passed and the fund raising began. Rhonda Trott the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, kicked it off with a 50/50 raffle, and we thought that it would get us started. Imagine our surprise when Lynn Hanner from the AIDB Foundation announced that the foundation would match the monies raised for the Berna Specht Award up to $10,000.00. “I never imagined anything like this to kick of the fund” Rhonda Trott said.
Speaking of awards The Marguerite McKinnon Award went to Ron Garrett for many years of service to the Blind of Alabama. The Exie Hill Award went to Debbie Culver for her many years of excellent service to the Blind.
When you hear someone say they left the convention with new and helpful information then your speakers were doing an excellent job. We were fortunate to have Ms. Pam Key who gave her heart rending story of how domestic violence had affected her life. While she spoke their wasn’t a sound in the room, and no one left or hardly moved. We will have information on Domestic Violence and the special laws that pertain to the disable posted soon. Our National Speaker Carla Ruschival brought us up to date on the state of ACB Nationally and we got two for the price of one when her husband Adam Ruschival, President American Council of Blind Lions, told us about the work of the Lions and how beneficial they are.
I will have much more to add in the coming days so stay tuned, come back often, oh well you get the picture.
